Melissa Hunt Fatally Injured in West Newton Assault; Suspect Craig Hameister in Custody
WABASHA COUNTY, MN — A quiet afternoon in the West Newton area turned tragic on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, when Melissa Hunt, a 36-year-old woman, was found severely injured and later died from her wounds. The Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office has launched a criminal investigation and confirmed that a suspect is in custody.
At approximately 4:45 p.m., deputies responded to an emergency call reporting a woman in critical condition who required immediate medical assistance. Upon arrival, first responders found Hunt with life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to St. Elizabeth’s Health Care, where, despite the efforts of medical personnel, she was pronounced dead.
The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Craig Alan Hameister of Rochester, was quickly located with the help of the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office. He was found in the Chester Woods area and taken into custody without incident. Hameister was then transported to Wabasha County Jail, where he remains held as the investigation continues.
Authorities confirmed that Hameister and Hunt had a prior relationship, though the nature and status of that relationship have not been fully disclosed. Investigators are currently working to determine the sequence of events that led to the deadly incident.
